Anger over delay in Ubisi rape case

Mongi (not her real name) says the case should have been concluded speedily because the attack took place eight years ago.

“It is humiliating having to look at this guy in the dock now and again,” Mongi told Sowetan yesterday.

She was speaking after the court delayed sentencing of convicted murderer and rapist Nyiko Ubisi after the defence lawyer, Paul Leisher, pleaded with the court to wait for the probation report before sentencing him.

Acting Judge Harold Knopp granted the request for the pre-sentencing report by the probation officer and postponed sentencing to August 22.

A probation officer is a person who works closely with both the courts and individuals who have been charged.

Ubisi was found guilty on Tuesday on two counts of murder, rape and three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
